The numbers of birds living in built up areas with many gardens is artificially high simply because so many of us love them and put out food. The food we supply supplements the natural food in the summer when there are lots of insects, caterpillars and others food items. This probably increases the chance of more chicks surviving so when winter arrives there is a large population of birds to survive on a vastly reduced natural food supply. That is what makes it so important to feed the birds more in winter. The birds in your garden rely on a regular daily supply of food, if you suddenly stop they will die of hunger, they can't simply move elsewhere because other areas will also be overpopulated for the food available. For this reason it is most important that if you take a winter holiday you find someone who will continue to feed your birds daily. The most dangerous time of all for wild birds is of course when the ground is covered with a layer of snow. At these times they rely almost entirely on us for their food supply so if you are on holiday for two weeks and they are not fed many may perish.
