Butterflies are amongst the most colourful insects. (genus lepidoptera).
The life story of a butterfly and many other insects is amazing. From the eating machine of the caterpillar stage through the pupae to the final emergence as an adult, the butterfly is one of the most beautiful end products. Only 56 species of butterly remain in the UK. Habitat loss caused by intensive farming methods and other reasons have led to the demise of many species. Because many species have specific local habitat requirements they have been lost to the UK forever. We must try to help those that remain and what better way than to create a butterfly garden in our own wildlife garden.
Making part of your wildlife garden into a butterfly garden will add lots of colour in two ways. Firstly the colours of the flowers themselves as butterflies prefer colours like purple yellow and red. Secondly the butterfly garden should also attract the butterflies themselves which will further add to the colour and your enjoyment of your wildlife butterfly garden.
