Blackcaps are woodland birds but can be attracted your garden if you have mature bushes and trees. The male has a black cap as the name suggests while the female has a brown cap. This makes the sexes very easy to distinguish apart. You won’t normally be able to attract blackcaps to your garden by having a bird table as they are insect eaters but having a pond will attract them as ponds attract insects. They are secretive birds and spend most of their time hiding in bushes. If you have a suitable habitat they may spend a few days around your garden as the migrate northwards through the UK during the spring. Their song is very melodic.
