Insects are essential to pollinate the fruits and flowers of foods which form a large part of the diet of human beings. Without these insects it is said the human race would be short of food. One of the most important insects for this purpose are honey bees. Honey bees occur in the wild but have been bred and used by humans for thousands of years. There are hieroglyphs in ancient Egypt showing men tending to hives. Apart from the bees pollinating fruits and flowers they produce honey. Honey is a by-product of the pollinating work that honey bees do and they make the honey as a store of food to see the hive through the winter. Unfortunately for them we humans have developed a taste for honey and this why they have been bred and kept in hives over the millennia. Don’t worry, when removing honey to be sold, bee keepers always leave enough for the bees to use over the winter months.
