Scabious

Scabious,also called the butterfly flower

Scabious,also called the butterfly flower

The Scabious (knautia arvensis) is one of a few plants often referred to as ‘butterly plants’ because butterflies along with other insects like bees and moths are so attracted to them, other names for it are Gypsy rose, Blue Button and Lady’s Pincushion. They can be various shades of mauve differing from one plant to the next. They grow up to about 12” (30cm) tall and have one flower on the top of each stem. The stems are quite bendy and sometimes look as if they are struggling to support the weight of the flower head. These plants are perennials and will grow from the same root stem year after year so they make excellent plants for wildlife gardens. I have had some growing in the same place for many years in my wildlife garden. Scabious are related to teasel which is another plant that insects love. The butterfly in the picture is a Clouded yellow
