Thistle

Thistles are loved by insects, especially bees but rarely by gardeners, however, if you have a wildlife garden it’s a good idea to include a small section of the garden where they can be left to grow. Thistle is the common name of a group of flowering plants which have leaves with sharp prickles on the margins, mostly in the family Asteraceae. Thistles will easily self set and they produce a lot of seeds when the flower head dies, so they have to be removed from any areas of your wildlife garden where you don’t want them to grow. The added bones of letting thistles grow in your garden is that Goldfinches love the seeds, so later in the year when the thistles have finished flowering they will attract those beautiful birds.
