Frozen ponds

Don’t forget on these cold winter mornings when you have to scrape the ice from your car window that there is no water for any animals. Birds and other animals need water just as much as food and when it’s all frozen they can become dehydrated. They also use it to bathe in, and although not many of us humans are prepared to take an ice cold bath, the birds don’t seem to mind. They happily splash away in the freezing water of the pond or bird bath when I have either broken the ice on the pond or thawed out the water in the bath. I use a kettle full of boiling water to thaw out the bird bath making sure sure that the water is not still hot when I leave.
