Libellula dragonfly female

The Libellula dragonfly is a broad bodied darter. The body is flat in shape so it looks quite wide. They are a common dragonfly and often visit my small wildlife garden pond. Both sexes have yellow patches down either side of the body. The male is pale blue and the female greeny gold (picture ). They grow to approx 50 mm long and can be seen between April and September, depending on the weather. The female can easily be mistaken for a hornet as she speeds around the pond. They are easy to photograph because they often return to the same perch and spend a lot of time there.
